Group features

Although I was not subscribed, I did visit a few groups and they did not seem to have any content or activity, so it did not seem necessary to subscribe. Was I wrong: only after subscribing I got access to the group forum! It appeared that none of the forum topics where marked "Public".

It is important to teach everyone to always look at the "Groups Audience" toggle boxes in everything you create. By default, "Public" should be toggled on and also at least one group.
There is an admin configuration setting that specifies that at least one group must be toggled. I would like that, there is no reason to create content outside of a group.

Easylinks

(Jurjen: You still need to subscribe back onto the "hive" group. :)

I installed EasyLinks, but unfortunately I don't care for it. It seems to work fine on the surface, but it's not well integrated into the rest of Drupal. The /easylinks page doesn't seem to be a node that we can assign categories to, so it's hard to fit it into navigation by category. I've worked around that, but...

It doesn't seem to use normal "node" records, so things listed in EasyLinks do not show up in Search. :( That's not acceptable, and I'm going to look for an alternative.

Drupal

The Hive is running on Drupal.

The Drupal Handbooks provide relatively good documentation for a free, open-source product. They are highly recommended if you are interested in a little more detail.

Contributor's note: Please use this page, or add child pages, to add more helpful hints about using Drupal on the hive.

tricky admin tip: user can't edit own node

Tricky!

If a node's "Input Format" gets set to something like full HTML or PHP, but the node's owner does not have permission to use that format, then the node owner can't edit their own node! The administrator has to change the node's input format back to something that the user/node-owner has permission to use.

I couldn't figure out why I wasn't able to edit a few of my ProRefactor pages. It's because I created those pages using Rich Text, which my normal user "john" account no longer has access to.

Organic Groups

Jurjen: Let's not change any of these...? Figuring out where all the Groups problems were coming from was very difficult.

- Workflow doesn't seem to work with Groups - had to disable the workflow for Groups for a user to be able to access a group they created.

- I have not set Groups to be automatically attached to Project or any other node types. The Project module and the Organic Groups modules are separate modules, and I'm concerned that they don't play perfectly well together.

- I have not enabled "Access Control" in the Organic Groups module.

Groups

I've set up "Extended Tracker". Now when you click "recent posts", you can see there's a tab for your own posts... that way if you create something, you can find it again. :)

I've re-enabled OG, OG Forum, and OG2List. I created a couple of groups, including "hive". It doesn't seem to have re-attached the old "hive" forum, but instead created a new one.

We could always find the node for the old forum, and add a link somewhere, if we wanted to reference that old stuff.

Hopefully this mailing list works. These OG modules seem awful brittle. I don't think we'll want to fiddle with their administration much more. I hope they are more solid in future releases.

Backups

The OEHive administrators maintain a mirror of the site in case of disaster, but EVERY CONTRIBUTOR AND PROJECT ADMINISTRATOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR BACKING UP THEIR OWN DATA.

Here's what you have to do:

  • Keep a local copy of anything you upload.
  • If you use a Subversion repository, back it up with rsync (see below)
  • Use rsync to back up any "nodes" that you are author of.

Ideally, you should set up an automated script to update your own mirror of your own data once per day.

You have read-only access to a backup of the databases. OEHive performs its backup of the Subversion and MySQL databases at 19:30 Mountain Time (GMT-7). It would be best not to run rsync at the same time.

How-to's for admins

Administrators have a lot on their mind, so here are a couple of check lists ....

How do I ......

The collaboration features of this website are diverse, we understand if you feel a bit lost at first. The following pages try to make you feel comfortable and explain the most common tasks. If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask (using the "contact us" form or using our forum).
When you see a page that needs improvement, you're welcome to add a comment to that page.

The Mission

The OpenEdge Hive was created to be a central resource for users of products of Progress Software. We are seeking to bring together the best open source software into a single site where it will be easy to find. We are providing a rich user interface via forums, manuals, bug reports, feature requests and the like so that the users of software can interact with the authors and each other to better use the software and to improve it through direction and contributions.

All of the software available for download from this site is free. In some cases, there may be a paid version available elsewhere or the software may require some other software that must be purchased elsewhere. In some cases the authors provide consulting services to support the software.

About OE Hive

OE Hive is administered by John Green and Jurjen Dijkstra.

Site Documentation

Add release (in a project) does not work

When you want to create a new release in a project and try to upload a file, the file will not get uploaded to the server and the release displays an error message.

A workaround is to upload the file with FTP to a designated directory, and then manually modify the project_releases record. Of course this is not a very nice workaround.

Admins only ....

things to document:

- the purpose of this website
- how can you join
- how can you collaborate in existing projects
- how can you start a new project
- how can you submit a new OpenWare
- how can you get listed on the Yellow or White pages
- what is: OpenWare, product, project, group
- what to do if something on The Hive does not work as expected

.. and much more :-) So lets get started and edit this thing (or sub-pages)

The Hive project

This is where "The OpenEdge Hive" is maintained and built. You can find site documentation, submit bugs and feature requests if something on the website does not work well, and you can discuss the features of this website in the Hive group. Submit specific issues on the The Hive Project Issue Tracker and more general discussion on the The Hive Group Forum
