Video on setting up Webspeed on MS Windows

Since it is asked quite often in the Progess community how to set up a broker in the MS Widnows environment, here is a little video on how to accomplish this.

Federal Contracts Database

For those who may be looking for something to do, perhaps this can be a lead. There is going to be a lot of work available through the government! If you nab one, don't forget who alerted you to it.

Business Drivers for Transformation

Because of the atmosphere of comfortable inertia around legacy ABL applications, they often experience a sort of benign neglect – small, short-term, immediate projects get attention and larger scope issues never quite make it onto the table. A developer might bring up one of these more general issues in response to something in an on-line forum or conference. Or an astute manager might be aware of the issue from prior experience or reading.

An inexpensive means of product research

I was watching the Charlie Rose interview with Marc Andreessen and he mentioned an interesting and inexpensive means of product marketing research.

Google Adwords.

Before even laying down a stitch of code, go out and buy some ad words based on the features or industry or demographic for your product. It doesn't have to even go to a real page (of course you probably don't want to screw your domain so use another) - just use the web site to pick up on how much interest there is in that product.

Why Do Companies Start Transformation Projects?

While development shops in companies with OpenEdge applications are as varied as development shops everywhere, there is a tendency for companies with OpenEdge applications to minimize their expenditures on computing. Ironically, this characteristic derives from the low cost of ownership of OpenEdge. Since it is rare for a company to require a full time DBA, as many databases need, the DBA role is a part time job for one of the developers.

Prolint release 73 is available

Prolint release 73 has a couple of bugfixes, a couple of new rules and a new feature.

The new feature is: an easier way to contribute your own custom rules with the world, or to shop for new contributed rules that other people may have uploaded.
Previously you had to send your rule to me, I would commit it to the Subversion version-control repository and people would get it if they wait for a new Prolint release or if they browse Subversion.

Include Unit Code at the bottom of your class files

One of the important things in software development is to do unit testing - that is a set of tests the programmer can do on a piece of code to be assured it is most likely working the way one wants it to.

Surprisingly it is rare to find unit test code as part of a source code file. If it is created at all (horror), it is usually tucked away on some developers disk someplace or simply thrown away!

What I have found helpful for myself as well as others working the same code, is to place a comment at the end of the program with the unit test code.

Modernizing Legacy Code - Getting Started

"Transformation" has become a popular term in the ABL for various kinds of application modernization -- moving to a new User Interface (UI), implementing a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), evolving toward the OpenEdge Reference Architecture (OERA), and other projects directed toward upgrading old versions of legacy ABL applictions. Today's ABL is just not the same language it was back 15-20 years ago when many ABL applications were first written and our ideas about good architecture have, if anything, evolved more than the language.

A simple tool to help generate webspeed code.

There are times when you create a web page with many html inputs. Creating the get-value() and variables for the logic of the program can be tedious and time consuming. This routine can help you generate the code automatically.

Simply feed it the HTML page (javascript and speedscript doesn't mean anything to it) and the output file you want the code to be contained in.

See attached file as code is maligned by the wiki.

MFG/Pro Project Manager and Systems Analyst needed

App Technologies is a consulting firm specializing in Progress development. We are located in Southeast Wisconsin.

We have an immediate need for both a MFG/Pro Project Manager and a MFG/Pro Systems Analyst. These positions require on-site work in Southeast Wisconsin. Telecommuting is not an option.

We would prefer to hire these consultant positions as full-time employees. However, we will consider sub-contracting as an option.
