member names

My name is Jurjen Dijkstra. I always use my real name for login codes, this works well because my real name happens to be pretty much unique.
There are however member codes that I cannot easily associate with real people. Funny acronyms, letters with numbers.
I don't know how you feel about that, but I like to have a tiny little bit more info... get to know our members a little bit. A real name, a peg identity, whatever.
Add a few public non-mandatory fields to the account info?

Re: member names

I really like that idea. My name is John Green. It's not even unique in the Progress world! But I do like to use my real name for login, so you'll often see me with a login or email address of "johnallengreen". But, not here. That's the benefit of being one of the first users. :)

Yah - I'd like a place for members to add a bit of information about themselves. Maybe the company they work for. Certainly their location - it's fun to know where in the world the people are that you are chatting with. Avatars would be fun, it's too bad Drupal doesn't support them. Even photos can be fun.

I have created "real name" and "location" fields and enabled a picture on the user profile form. Unfortunately the picture does not show up in forum comments, oh well. Unless we mod the display template of course.

Cool! How did you add fields? (Are those things you could configure, or did you have to hack the code?)

Re: member names

I did not hack a thing. You can create all kinds of fields in menu "administer > settings > profiles". The picture was enabled in "administer > settings > users".

menu "administer > themes", configure your theme, toggle "user pictures in comments".
Hmmm, have to get used to it I guess.

I am. Make sure you are subscribed to the Hive group, and make sure that you *also* have your subscription settings with email notifications turned on (two steps).
